How Does Professional Teeth Whitening Work?
A professional teeth whitening treatment consists of a hydrogen peroxide whitening gel, which works to break apart the stains on the teeth. Oxygen floods the enamel and dentin of the teeth, which works to eliminate stains that have been building up for years. Imagine your teeth looking whiter and brighter after just one treatment!
How Long Does the Whitening Procedure Take?
Your whitening appointment will probably take about one hour. We will prepare you for treatment first; the bleaching process itself takes about 45 minutes. Patients can expect to be at their whitening treatment appointment for about an hour. We recommend that patients have their teeth cleaned prior to the whitening treatment.
When it comes to the teeth whitening process, most people find that the procedure is not uncomfortable. During your treatment, you can sit back and relax, watching television or listening to music. If you have concerns about the treatment or a strong gag reflex, we invite you to talk to us about the treatment beforehand so you know exactly what to expect. Don’t hesitate to talk to us before your appointment if you have any concerns.
Is Professional Teeth Whitening Safe?
Many people wonder if teeth whitening is safe. Others may have heard that the treatment can cause sensitivity and gum irritation. Although it is true that over-the-counter teeth whitening kits can cause irritation—particularly if they are used improperly—having your teeth whitened by a dental professional is safe. In addition, unlike over-the-counter whitening, results will be immediate..
How Long Do the Results Last?
If you follow up your teeth whitening treatment with at-home care with your whitening trays, you can expect results to last for quite a while. Try not to revert back to habits that stained your teeth in the first place to ensure your whitening lasts as long as possible!
The team at Glazer Family Dentistry will give you thorough instructions to ensure your results last as long as possibe. They will also remind you to come in twice each year for cleanings and examinations!

Teeth stains can occur on different surfaces of the tooth and for different reasons. Most common factors in causing teeth staining include oral hygiene and diet habits. Regularly drinking coffee, tea, sodas and smoking tobacco increase the likeliness of enamel staining. Not all causes of teeth staining are preventative though. In older patients, teeth staining occurs naturally due to the thinning of the enamel layer, allowing the yellow dentin to become visually prominent. Other factors which cause teeth to stain include certain medical treatments, and a history of tooth trauma and/or disease.
The most common foods which stain teeth have rich, deep colors like chocolate, berries, soda, wine, coffee, and tea. Basically, everything good! To prevent staining, after eating, rinse your mouth with water and brush your teeth to remove any residual particles. A regular scheduled dental cleaning can also remove a good amount of food stains!
